“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” ~Thomas Edison

Holistic Health Coach Defined

A holistic health and wellness coach is “a trained professional who uses an integrative approach to both diet and lifestyle changes to improve their client’s health.” (Source: AFPA). A holistic health coach helps his/her clients live in the present, rebuild the mind/body connection, and prioritize self-care for a healthier and happier life.

They work as guides assessing one’s nutritional patterns, fitness level, relationships, religious/spiritual beliefs, etc. Thus holistic health looks at the world person – mind, body, and spirit. So holistic health coaching is not a one-size-fits-all. Everyone’s needs differ; therefore, you are always in the driver’s seat.

For example, one client might need help with body image because they develop the confidence to go to the gym or to attend public exercise classes. On the other hand, another client might want to seek the ancient way of healing through herbalism instead of pharmaceutical drugs in partnership with their licensed healthcare provider.

Although holistic health and wellness coaches are knowledgeable in their chosen holistic wellness niche, we do not uphold ourselves as licensed nutritionists, registered dietitians, or certified personal trainers – unless credentialed. Neither do holistic coaches act in the capacity of licensed health care providers, which we are not unless licensed or credentialed as such. Therefore, we do not diagnose patients or act as licensed therapists treating or counseling those with mental illness disorders. Each of those areas should be handled by its respective professionals. Like life coaches, holistic health coaches encourage, consult, and facilitate choices and habits that help clients reach their wellness goals.

Holistic Health/Wellness vs. Holistic Nutritional Coaching

Although many use the terms interchangeably, our distinction is simply. Holistic health and wellness coaching is more like life coaching whereas the entire focus is on assessing where you are and what small and impactful changes that you would like to make to improve your health. In this type of coaching, you are in the driver’s side, so there is less direction from your coach. With your coach as your “tour guide”, you will sort through what’s the best approach toward long-term improvement for your life. You will chart your own direction, set your goals, create your own homework and report back your results (or lack thereof) – all while under the wonderful care of your coach. Holistic health/wellness coaching is unlike holistic nutritional coaching because the latter focuses on taking a deep dives into your health history and current health challenges. In this case, the coach does not talking, questioning and providing direction by giving specific holistic advice and direction as it relates to your situation. But nevertheless, you are always in control and can decide for or against any course of direction. One thing we instill in our clients – you will be accountable for your own losses and although we clap for your success, we won’t take credit for your wins! That’s all on you!

Benefits of Holistic Health Coaching:
  1. Prioritize self-care against balancing a busy schedule, thus providing you with the time, energy, and vitality to help/serve others without spreading yourself too thin.
  2. Work one-on-one with a holistic wellness practitioner who developed a personalized nutritional protocol plan based on your needs.
  3. Serve as an empathetic, listening ear, asking questions to help you think/see yourself or your situation in a new light.
  4. Access to a secure client portal to conduct sessions, provide health updates, download supportive materials based on your needs.
  5. Help you develop skills to develop long-term habits for continued improvement but also to help you recognize triggers that may cause temporary setbacks.
  6. Establish a mind-body connection to recognize any warning signs through pain, stress, and the like – all of which indicate that something is out of alignment elsewhere in your life.
